Drowning Prevention Week: Why It Matters to Every Family

Every year, we proudly support Drowning Prevention Week – a national campaign dedicated to raising awareness of water safety and helping to prevent accidental drownings.

As a swim school in the heart of Brentwood, we believe learning to swim is about so much more than mastering strokes. It's about giving children the confidence, knowledge and life-saving skills they need to stay safe in and around water.

What is Drowning Prevention Week?

Drowning Prevention Week is an annual campaign organised by the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK). It aims to educate families, schools and communities about the importance of water safety, particularly as warmer weather encourages more people to spend time near pools, beaches, lakes, rivers and canals.

Sadly, many accidental drownings are preventable through education, supervision and the right swimming skills. The campaign reminds us that water can be enjoyable, but it should always be treated with respect.

Why We Take Part

At The Swim Stars, water safety is at the heart of everything we do.

Every lesson is designed not only to improve swimming ability but also to help children develop confidence in the water. We teach our swimmers essential skills that could one day make all the difference, including:

  • Safe ways to enter and exit the water.

  • Floating and recovering to a standing position.

  • Building confidence if they unexpectedly find themselves in deep water.

  • Understanding how to behave safely around pools and open water.

  • Developing strong swimming techniques through the Swim England Learn to Swim Framework.

These skills aren't just for lessons—they're skills for life.

Water Safety Starts at Home

Parents and carers play an equally important role in keeping children safe around water.

Simple steps can make a huge difference:

  • Always supervise children closely whenever they are near water.

  • Never assume another adult is watching.

  • Teach children to respect water, even if they are confident swimmers.

  • Encourage swimming lessons from an early age.

  • Talk regularly about water safety before holidays, beach trips and visits to friends with swimming pools.

Supporting Families Across Brentwood

Whether your family is visiting the coast this summer, enjoying local parks with lakes, or simply spending time in the garden around paddling pools, water safety should always be a priority.

As a local swim school, we're passionate about helping children throughout Brentwood develop the confidence, skills and awareness they need to enjoy the water safely for years to come.

Every Lesson Builds Confidence

Learning to swim is one of the most valuable life skills a child can have.

During Drowning Prevention Week, and every week, we're proud to help children become stronger, safer and more confident swimmers.

Together, we can make a real difference.

If you'd like to find out more about our lessons or book your child onto a class, we'd love to welcome you to The Swim Stars.
